1. Your AC is Over 10-15 Years Old

Age is the most significant factor in determining whether to repair or replace. The average lifespan of a central air conditioning system is 10 to 15 years. If your system is approaching or has surpassed this age, its efficiency is likely dropping, and the risk of a major component failure (like the compressor) is high. Even if an older unit is still running, upgrading to a modern, high-SEER system can cut your cooling costs significantly.

2. Frequent and Costly Repairs

Are you on a first-name basis with your HVAC technician? If you're calling for repairs multiple times a season, your system is failing. A good rule of thumb is the "$5,000 Rule": Multiply the age of the equipment by the estimated cost of the repair. If the total exceeds $5,000, replacement is the smarter financial choice.

For example, if your 12-year-old AC needs a $500 repair (12 x 500 = 6,000), it's time to let it go. Continuing to pour money into a dying system is a losing battle.

3. Skyrocketing Energy Bills

If your air conditioner was installed before 2010, it likely uses R-22 refrigerant (commonly known as Freon). Due to environmental regulations, the production and import of R-22 was completely phased out in the US in 2020. This means that if your older system develops a refrigerant leak, the cost to recharge it with the limited, remaining supply of R-22 is astronomical. In these cases, replacement is almost always the only viable option.

5. Strange Noises and Poor Airflow

Your AC should operate relatively quietly. If you start hearing loud grinding, squealing, or banging noises, it indicates a serious internal mechanical problem, such as a failing motor or compressor. Additionally, if you notice weak airflow coming from your vents, or if some rooms are freezing while others are hot, your system is struggling to perform its basic function.
